When to Plant Trees in Oklahoma
Many Oklahomans are puzzled about when to plant trees in Oklahoma. Some people say it’s fall while others suggest the best time for planting trees in Oklahoma is spring. However, it turns out that both groups of people are correct. According to the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University (OSU), the answer is both fall and spring, depending on the type of tree you’re planting.
Fall is the ideal time for planting plants grown in containers, balled and burlapped (B&B) shade trees, ornamental trees and ornamental pines. This allows the root systems in these plants more time to become established before the summer heat wave hits. On the other hand, if you’re wanting to plant bare-root or packaged plants, the best time for that is in the middle of February to the middle of April.
